Federal Health Minister Chairs Important Meeting with Pakistan Veterinary Pharmaceutical Association on 2D Barcode and Drug Traceability

On 30 September 2026, a high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Health, Syed Mustafa Kamal, with the Pakistan Veterinary Pharmaceutical Association (PVPA) to discuss the implementation of the 2D barcode system and traceability of veterinary and poultry medicines.

The PVPA delegation was led by Chairman Dr. Asim Mahmood Khan, with Mr Shoaib Amjad, Vice Chairman (North), and Central Executive Committee members Dr Sajeel Das, Dr KN Khawaja and Mr. Zain Randhawa. The meeting included CEO DRAP Dr Obaid Ullah and other officials from DRAP.

The meeting included a detailed review of the proposed 2D barcode mechanism for veterinary and poultry pharmaceutical products, with particular focus on product authentication, traceability and strengthening the regulatory oversight of medicines used in animal health.

The Federal Minister emphasised the importance of eliminating counterfeit and substandard medicines and noted that a 2D barcode system can contribute to a safer, more authentic and verifiable pharmaceutical supply chain.

The Minister stated that work on the implementation of 2D barcodes for medicines has been underway for approximately the past one and a half years.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of veterinary medicines within the broader One Health framework, recognising that animal health, food safety and human health are interconnected. Effective regulation, monitoring and quality assurance of veterinary medicines therefore remain important components of public health protection.

PVPA continues to engage with relevant government and regulatory authorities on strengthening the veterinary pharmaceutical regulatory framework, improving traceability and supporting responsible access to quality-assured veterinary medicines.

This page records a regulatory discussion. It does not announce that a 2D barcode system has been implemented for all veterinary medicines, and it does not report a government approval, exemption, or compliance deadline.
